Post Pre-Season Week 1: Yikes.
Preseason Week 1 is in the books. The regular stars played like stars. Some backups shined and upped the ante on winning a roster spot. Others, not so much. One thing is for certain, it did seem many more injuries occured in this first preseason week than in years past, if my memory serves me correctly. Ben Tate, the Houston Texans' 2nd round draft pick this season, was lost for the season. Eli Manning, though not predicted to miss any games in the regular season, received 12 stitches in his head after Monday night's Giants victory to christen their new stadium. Uncertainty defintely seems to be the trend or better yet the word to describe the start of this season. Knowing what I know now, Eli Manning, Ben Tate, Stafon Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Fred Jackson, Marshawn Lynch, Torry Holt and Limas Sweed will be near the bottom of my radar. Larry Fitzgerald should be okay by the start of the season but when a Top Tier WR injures a knee, it's a cause for concern. Continue keeping your eye on his progress, should you want to draft him higher than the 4th round.
Before I wrap this up, I have assembled an UPDATED "Top 5" of each position in standard Fantasy Leagues(QB, RB, WR, TE, K, DEF). Feel free to consult this list come draft day.
TOP 5 QB's
Peyton Manning-Colts: Still the model QB.
Drew Brees-Saints: Throw 1st, answer questions later.
Aaron Rodgers-Packers: Gunslinger extraordinaire.
Philip Rivers-Chargers: Who will he be throwing to this year?
Tom Brady-Patriots: We all wonder if the knee will hold up.....again.
TOP 5 RB's
Chris Johnson-Titans: HIS nickname should be the "Freak."
Adrian Peterson-Vikings: All Day will have to run all game with the loss of Chester Taylor.
Maurice Jones-Drew-Jaguars: "Little Bruiser" will once again dominate the AFC South.
Steven Jackson-Rams: He IS the Rams offense.
DeAngelo Williams/Jonathan Stewart-Panthers: This combo was unstoppable last season, both averaging over 5.0 yards per carry.
Top 5 WR's
Andre Johnson-Texans: Schaub needs to throw his way more often in the red zone.
Larry Fitzgerald-Cardinals: Combo of size/speed makes him more dangerous each year.
Calvin Johnson-Lions: "Megatron" should have an outstanding year, pending Matthew Stafford's health.
Reggie Wayne-Colts: He has the best QB throwing his way each game.
Roddy White-Falcons: Continues to grow alongside Matt Ryan and establishing a positive rapport with him.
Top 5 TE's
Dallas Clark-Colts: Just like Reggie Wayne, his QB makes him better.
Jason Witten-Cowboys: Tough, physical and fights for yards. Always seems to be wide open.
Antonio Gates-Chargers: In the perfect offense for a guy who can block and catch.
Vernon Davis-49ers: Stepped up last year and has bigger expectations in 2010.
Brent Celek-Eagles: With McNabb gone, Eagles will look to Celek more often.
Top 5 K's
Nate Kaeding-Chargers: Kicks in warm weather and for a high-powered offense.
Rob Bironas-Titans: Big leg. Made 5 field goals of 50+ yards. Not to mention, accurate.
Ryan Longwell-Vikings: Gets a boost for kicking indoors half the season.
Mason Crosby-Packers: This kid has a strong and accurate leg. But Lambeau can be tricky in winter.
Stephen Gostkowski-Patriots: The Patriots score a bunch so G-Man kicks a lot.
Top 5 DEF
New York Jets- Have to mention Darrelle Revis. There. Did it. Now stop holding out.
Baltimore Ravens- Getting older before getting younger but these guys can still play.
Green Bay Packers- 30 INT's is a disgustingly good stat in the takeaway category.
Cincinnati Bengals- Who knew?
Minnesota Vikings- Those big run stoppers have no suspensions this season....so far.

New! New! New! Read on(stay thirsty) my friends....
And with that being said, let me retract a few things: First, Wes Welker has been removed from the Top 5 WR list due to his "questionable" return from injury. Every player on that list, in my previous post, has moved up one slot and Welker has been replaced by Roddy White of the Atlanta Falcons at #5.
Next, I would like to apologize to all the hockey die hards out there for my recent comments about how the season should not run into warm weather months. I was just concerned for the players because I don't want the ice to melt and the players' skates to get stuck in the floor. I can't see hockey players doing so well playing basketball. Also, the words 'summer' and 'ice hockey' just should not be in the same sentence. Ever.
Lastly, I want to remind all of you that August is the official Fantasy Draft Month! Most leagues conduct their Fantasy Football draft in the month of August(I have 3 drafts to attend) so make sure you are switching your thought process to draft strategy without the prospect of losing your job, for those of you blessed enough to have one in these rough days. If you are not currently employed, then you should have a one-up on almost all of us since you have more time to 'study(or read this blog).'
Let's talk draft strategy for a second here: If you are blessed with the #1 overall pick in your or any draft you are in, who will you take? Chris Johnson? Adrian Peterson? Maurice Jones-Drew? Comment below if you dare. Draft strategy is important in this day and age of Fantasy Football. Obviously we don't want to be drafting David Akers with the 1st overall pick or even in the 1st 14 rounds. Is drafting a QB with your 1st pick the way to go? In this, the year of the WR and TE, and with many of the NFL teams going to 2-back systems, we find ourselves with declining QB's(Favre potentially retiring today, Brady's health questions, Kurt Warner retired) and crowded backfields(Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams both broke 1,000 yds last season in Carolina). Another positon player had to step up and it will be a deep draft with the talent in the WR and TE pools.
All things considered, draft strategy is important to have a fighting chance in Fantasy Football. Each player, every year, gets wiser(or luckier) which means most of us need to try even harder and come up with the best strategy when drafting. Write it on a cocktail napkin while eyeing the beautiful blonde across the bar, knowing that you won't have the 'cojones' to walk over to her and ask her, flat out: Should I draft Adrian Peterson with my first pick or draft a Top Tier quarterback? If her reply has anything to do with money, walk away. It's not going to work out in your favor. If she explains to you the upside of drafting a Top Tier QB over a RB who has a case of the dropsies, or how Aaron Rodgers had the 2nd most fantasy points in the league last year(396.3) behind a guy who collected over 2,500 total yards(Chris Johnson-396.9), marry her on the spot. And then have her run your team. What have you got to lose?
Be sure to check out this site each and every week throughout the football season for tips, advice, wit and humor. I promise it will be much better to read this than to stare at the head of hair of a certain prognosticator on a certain sports television station.
Feel free to email me(btmfantasyfootball@yahoo.com) with any questions regarding anything Fantasy Football-related. Or, if you really want dating advice on what to say to that blonde you met in your local establishment, I will gladly respond but know that I will most likely tell all of my friends you asked for dating advice. If you want that type of advice, wait until I publish my book.

Take off some clothes and a Pre-Season Top 5 all in one!
While the website continues to be tweaked, and to prepare for the upcoming Fantasy Football season, I have assembled a "Who's Who" Top 5 for each Offensive position and also the Top 5 Defenses for the 2010-11 Season. Remember, these are the Top 5 based on last years stats and predictions for the coming season. Without further adieu:
TOP 5 QB's
1. Peyton Manning-Colts: Still the man.
2. Drew Brees-Saints: Throw 1st, answer questions later.
3. Philip Rivers-Chargers: Is he still whining?
4. Tom Brady-Patriots: We all wonder if the knee will hold up.....again.
5. Matt Schaub/Aaron Rodgers-Texans/Packers: Can't make up my mind who deserves to be here.
TOP 5 RB's
1. Chris Johnson-Titans: HIS nickname should be the "Freak."
2. Adrian Peterson-Vikings: All Day will have to run all game with the loss of Chester Taylor
3. Maurice Jones-Drew-Jaguars: "Little Bruiser" will once again dominate the AFC South
4. Steven Jackson-Rams: He IS the Rams offense.
5. Jonathan Stewart/DeAngelo Williams-Panthers: This combo was unstoppable last season, both averaging over 5.0 yards per carry.
Top 5 WR's
1. Andre Johnson-Texans: Someone needs to throw his way for more TD's.
2. Wes Welker-Patriots: In PPR leagues, this guy is a Top 5 WR.
3. Larry Fitzgerald-Cardinals: Combo of size/speed makes him more dangerous each year
4. Vincent Jackson-Chargers: Getting the ball more and more. Needs more TDs this season
5. Reggie Wayne-Colts: He has the best QB throwing his way each game.
Top 5 TE's
1. Dallas Clark-Colts: Just like Reggie Wayne, his QB makes him better.
2. Jason Witten-Cowboys: Tough SOB fights for yards and always seems to be wide open.
3. Antonio Gates-Chargers: In the perfect offense for a guy who can block and catch.
4. Vernon Davis-49ers: Stepped up last year and has bigger expectations in 2010.
5. Brent Celek-Eagles: With McNabb gone, Eagles will find Celek more often.
Top 5 K's
1. Nate Kaeding-Chargers: Kicks in warm weather and for a high-powered offense.
2. Rob Bironas-Titans: Big leg. Made 5 field goals of 50+ yards. Not to mention, accurate.
3. Ryan Longwell-Vikings: Gets a boost for kicking indoors half the season.
4. Mason Crosby-Packers: This kid has a strong and accurate leg. But Lambeau is a bitch.
5. Stephen Gostkowski-Patriots: The Patriots score a bunch so G-Man kicks a lot.
Top 5 DEF
1. New York Jets: Have to mention Darrelle Revis. There. Did it.
2. Baltimore Ravens: Getting older before getting younger but these guys can still play.
3. Green Bay Packers: 30 INT's is a disgusting stat. Thank goodness we're talking Defense!
4. Cincinnati Bengals: Who knew?
5. Minnesota Vikings: Those big run stoppers have no suspensions this season....so far.
So there you have it. My Preseason Top 5 "Who's Who." Since we are only in June, and many of you(including myself) are focused on baseball, or even the Stanley Cup(and I can't leave out....gulp....NASCAR), I remind you.....wait, why is hockey being played in June? Isn't it over yet? Hockey lovers, I apologize. But a cold weather sport should end during the cold weather season. My opinion only. There may be others out there who share that, but I put it in print.
Switching gears BACK to football, who do you think will be the laughing stock of the NFL this year? Rams? Lions? Chiefs? Will the Saints keep up their winning ways? Who will be the 1st superstar to sustain a major setback?
As you ponder some of those questions, also ponder what it takes to win a Fantasy Football championship. New people are joining the ranks of the Fantasy Football faithful each and every year and they will present a challenge to those dominating teams. Pass the word along about this blog and upcoming website. Let them receive the help and advice they seek. After all, it's a long way to fall from the top but someone has to knock them off sooner or later. It is nice to see more and more women joining, playing and actually winning in Fantasy Football. Ladies, you are always welcome to play, even if some men think otherwise!
I leave you all with a favorite quote of mine, modified a little of course:
“Some people think fantasy football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that.”
Good luck to all and don't forget to spread the word!

What To Look For in the Upcoming Season....
I would like to thank those of you who continued to read my blog week after week and of course my loyal followers. I hope to have a larger following next season and will have much more to add.
The 2009 Fantasy Football season brought about many surprises. Who knew Chris Johnson would break records especially playing for a team that started the season 0-6? The Saints at 13-3 and #1 seed in the playoffs? Playoffs? Playoffs? You wanna talk about playoffs? Why did Jim Caldwell bench Peyton Manning when they had a shot at the perfect season? Tom Cable punched out one of his coaches. Chris Henry dies after falling out of the back of a pickup truck during a domestic dispute. Cedric Benson does not receive any DUI's and is one of the NFL's leading rushers. Plaxico, oh Plaxico. Yep. Still in prison.
Congrats to those of you who made a deep playoff run in your Fantasy League, won your League's Super Bowl or perhaps won a Pick 'Em League. If my advice helped out in any way, I will offer up a "you're welcome!"
As the NFL season culminates, I advise you to prepare for the upcoming season by doing what is necessary. Drink lots of beer, eat pizza and wings and dwell on last season because when the 2010 season begins, you won't remember what happened in 2009. And this is where BTM Fantasy Football comes to your rescue!
We will help you prepare for the upcoming season by giving you draft day advice, season statistics, predictions on who will have a breakout season....everything you need to know to have a successful Fantasy Football team. Spook-tacular Football Weekend
Back to Plaxico. Wonder who his girlfriend in prison is?
More on the Bears. Cleveland comes to town this weekend. Oh goody! I'm hoping, strongly hoping, the Bears offense kicks it into high gear and route the Brown Bags. If that is the case, Cutler, Hester, Forte, Knox and Bennett should reap many of the benefits.
Brett Fa....oh nevermind. We all know what that is all about. Packers vs. Vikings in Lambeau. Blah blah blah.
Let me prognosticate a few games here: Houston vs. Buffalo. The Texans are healthy, becoming an offensive juggernaut and have a one of the best receivers in the game. Not to mention, a tight end in Owen Daniels, who flashed signs of brilliance last week. Watch for them to come out throwing and stop at nothing to go 2 games above .500. PICK: Houston PLAY: Matt Schaub, Owen Daniels BENCH: Buffalo Defense
Besides the NFC North Division game between the Mean Green Machine and the Purple People Eaters, another matchup will be anticipated by millions. New Orleans puts it's undefeated record to the test when the red-hot Atlanta Falcons roll into town on Monday Night Football. Will the Falcons and Matt Ryan be able to go touchdown for touchdown with the high flying Saints? I don't think they will. Brees and company will pull this one out but I assure you, it will not be a blowout. The X-Factor in this game will be the Saints defense. If they can contain Ryan, Roddy White and "The Burner," I feel the Saints will go undefeated on the season. PICK: Saints PLAY: Saints defense, Lance Moore, Pierre Thomas BENCH: Michael Jenkins
The Cardinals have been waiting for a game like this. The Panthers, have not. Because of the weak defense played by the "Steel-less" Panthers, Arizona should have a joyride awaiting them. Steve Breaston has been chosen as my Sleeper Pick this week. He has been standing idley by, just foaming at the mouth for a game of this caliber. Cardinal Nation has been too.
Ladies and gentleman, it is the weekend in which we embrace the time honored tradition of "dressing up." I don't mean just in the bedroom. Men dress like women. Women dress like hookers I saw on a late night adventure into the big city a few years back. Only difference, they won't wink at me. That thought still sends shivers down my spine! So, because of this yearly Halloween tradition, I have a few scary thoughts for you to ponder: The Lions will win more games than the Bears this season, the 0-7 Titans will go 10-6 next season and beat the Colts twice, and the Oakland Raiders will beat the Vikings to win the Super Bowl next year. Scary huh? Of course, we all know none of these scenarios won't happen, but I did want to put a scare into some of you. Happy Halloween!

Cedric Benson Fodder...How Delightful
"Ravens wings' get clipped
Browns heading to Toilet Bowl
Redskins scalpping Chiefs."
Since I received very few responses, none of which included a Haiku prediction, I have decided to cease my own attempts at Haiku for the time being.
That being said, how about the Saints? Nothing like putting a hurtin' on the Little Giants this past week and proving the NFL that your defense is for real. We know what your offense can do. However, Reggie Bush has seemed to be a non-factor almost all season. I'm guessing too much time spent with Kim Kardashian. She seems to be somewhat of a leech.
I need to ask a question and if anyone out there has the answer, please, humor me. I will be very straight forward and to the point: How did Raiders beat the Eagles? Seriously. There was some voodoo magic going on there because in an otherwise 'normal' NFL season in which the Raiders are the rebuilding, run by a maniacal, speed-hungry, health declining fool(yes, I mean Al Davis) type of team, there is no way they would or could defeat a potent Eagles offense and stingy defense. What did you put in the Bay air, Mr. Davis?
Cedric Benson is accusing the Bears of trying to blackball him. Time has run out on Plaxico's demeaning. Insert: Benson. Cedric, are you trying to tell us that you work ethic, your style of play in games was impeccable? Why don't you go and cry some more about not getting enough playing time. Thomas Jones did not deserve to lose any carries to you.
Ok McNabb had a bad outing. I get it. No need to say 'I told you so.'
Four undefeated teams left. Saints, Vikings, Colts and Broncos. Out of those teams, most people would predict that the Broncos will be the first team to have a loss. Well, 6 games into the season for them and a few tough tests and they have proved many experts wrong. I am not jumping on their bandwagon for I know they will lose and will do it soon. Looking into my Fantasy Football glass ball, I do not forecast any team going undefeated this season. Of the teams currently without a loss, I feel as though the Colts have the best chance, and when I say best, it is a very slim chance, but better than the other 3 teams. I've been known to be wrong a time or two.
Two weeks and two easy games for Green Bay. The Pack heads into the 'Puppy' Dawg Pound to take on a Browns team that, well, I don't even have much to say about them. Aaron Rodgers: HUGE day. Jennings and Driver: HUGE day. Ryan Grant: BIG day. PICK: Packers
San Francisco and Houston are two teams who are young and start out slow but are starting to come into their own. These 2 teams will be battling it out to decide whether or not they will contend for the division title or even a wild card berth. Frank Gore returns from injury and will step into his starting role again with something to prove. He wants that elusive rushing title and will stop at nothing to get it. Also of note, Michael Crabtree will make his debut this Sunday against the Texans. Will he be a factor? Doubtful. Don't believe the hype. Houston's passing attack will be too much for the upstart 49ers defense to handle. PICK: Houston PLAY: Kevin Walter, Steve Slaton, Matt Schaub, Frank Gore BENCH: Michael Crabtree, 49ers Defense
Game of the Week: Minnesota at Pittsburgh
This game should be quite the barn burner. Both have great defenses(although the Steelers D has been suspect at times this year), both have stepped up their offenses and special teams for the Vikes and the Steelers has been nothing short of fantastic this season. The X Factor in this game I believe will be the Special Teams play for both teams.
Josh Johnson is my Sleeper Pick of the week. He is young, can run, has a good arm and is going up against the Cowboys who are coming off a bye week and have question marks in their defense. Expect him to run quite a bit, keeping the Dallas D honest, then watch out for the deep threat play that could ultimately sink Big D.
Next time, on BTM Fantasy Football......
" 'I told you so' does not apply to Donovan McNabb's return against the Redskins. They are a sinking ship. "
" The Patriots play in snow one week and the next they are in sunny Tampa. How's that for dumb luck?"
" Cedric Benson Completes TriFecta, Arrested in Cincinnati for Flying Drunk After Loss to Former Team."

Predictions in Haiku
The Browns. Can we just call them the "Why are you still a franchise?" I have to share this with anyone who didn't see the game or catch any highlights(or lowlights). Derek Anderson, who replaced Brady Quinn at QB, had 2 completions, yes 2, threw the ball 17 times, for a whopping 23 yards, no TD's, one INT and had a QB rating of 15.1. Wow. I am still in shock. Oh yeah, and the Browns won! Take a second to let that sink in......
Oh Plaxico, it looks as if the Giants don't need you and your assault weapon. 44-7 was the score of that game. Hope the 3 hours of "playtime" out of your cell are worth shooting yourself over.
There were many-a-doubters on McNabb's return to the field after missing 3 games with a rib injury. He came back in fine form, tossing 3 TD's and over 260 yards against the patchwork Buccaneers. I stood by him. Suggested he start at QB in Fantasy leagues. He put up decent numbers. Again, this week, he has another favorable matchup, going to the Black Hole to play a less than worthy to mention Raiders team. Play McNabb! I implore you.
A battle of the unbeatens....Eli and the Giants head to the Superdome to face Drew Brees and the shockingly unbeaten Saints. This is shaping up to be a great offensive and defensive game! The Saints, who in the past decade, have had many succeptable defenses, come into week 6 with one of the best in the league. How good will the New York Football Giants be against a team they cannot take lightly? We all know the Saints can almost score at will, but will their defense be able to hold against another offensive juggernaut? Will the Giants defense be able to contain the high scoring Saints offense and keep Brees from blowing them out with the passing game?
This week, the Lions head to Green Bay to take on the Pack. Favorable matchups are every where to be seen in this game. Aaron Rodgers will come out throwing, Donald Driver and Greg Jennings should both put up some huge numbers and Ryan Grant should have no problems breaking some big runs against the Lions defense. On the other side of the ball, with the Packers coming into their own in the 3-4 Defense, they should be able to contain Kevin Smith without a problem and if Culpepper is still starting for the injured Matthew Stafford, the passing game should be of no concern. PICK: Packers PLAY: Donald Driver, Ryan Grant BENCH: Kevin Smith
Two games of very high interest: Chicago vs. Atlanta in the Georgia Dome. Last year, the Bears, clinging to a 5 point lead and 22 seconds left, decided to squibb the kickoff, giving the high flying Falcons and rookie QB Matt Ryan plenty of time and great field position to set up Jason Elam for the game-winning field goal. I bet Lovie Smith will never again call for a squibb kick on a kickoff with a 5 point lead. This game has potential to be a shootout, with both teams playing at a very high level. if the Bears defense can contain Michael "The Burner" Turner and put a lot of pressure on Matt Ryan, they should be able to leave Sweet Georgia without the Falcons on their mind. PICK: Bears PLAY: Johnny Knox, Roddy White
The 2nd game of interest is Seattle vs. Arizona. Last week, Matt Hasselbeck returned from injury, threw 4 TD passes and the Seahawks flew away with a 41-0 win of the clawless Jaguars. Not sure which bird will reign supreme, but this is a showdown that will see who is for real in the NFC West. Arizona, still suffering from the Super Bowl hangover, needs a big win to show that they can once again win the division and rely on Kurt Warner's arm to catapult them into the playoffs. And if their running game can take flight, the Cards can be a dangerous foe.
PICK: Cardinals
I'm going on a hunch here and am going to choose Marcedes Lewis as my Sleeper Pick. The Jaguars are sure to bounce back after that 41-0 drubbing last week when they face a defenseless, and offenseless, Rams team who could match last year's Lions team as the 2nd team in NFL history to go 0-16.
Last week, I was singing to myself a few songs that a couple NFL teams could relate to. The Titans, as I predicted and yet had no idea they would attribute this song to them, lost on Sunday Night Football, and Toby Keith's "As Good As I Once Was" was played during the game. I wonder if the NFL looked at my blog? If they did, I must be doing something right. This week, I am not singing. Instead, I am pondering if I should write in Haiku for the rest of this season. This coming weeks predictions, in Haiku:
Ravens wings get clipped
Browns heading to Toilet Bowl
Redskins scalpping Chiefs
I think I will stick to articles. My Haiku skills peaked and declined in high school. READERS: Send me a recap of the 1st five weeks in Haiku or a prediction for the remainder of the season in Haiku and I will post what I feel is the best one in next week's blog. Have fun with this and I look forward to your responses.

Six winless franchises, 5 undefeateds, and a big trade in the small town
Usually at this point I make some sort of comment about Plaxico Burress being in prison but I think I will give him a reprieve until next week. I mean the guy probably hasn't had a shower in a few days so let's let him alone.
Kyle Orton wins. He is the epitome of the 'game managing QB.' When Orton was on the Bears, he was giving the starting job because of a QB who I dare not name went down with an injury. One of many. In his rookie season, KO went 10-5 as a starter. Not bad for a rookie QB whose leash did not extend 10 feet beyond the fire hydrant he was chained to. Now he is with the Broncos, and, at 4-0, I am still questioning if they are for real. The Pats come to Invesco Field this weekend in a game that promises to have a Student facing Master in a battle for AFC domination feel to it. Belichick, I am sure, hopes to teach his former student that "no matter how much you studied me, I will always hold back that one trick, that one secret, that will help prevail."
The over-hyped Minnesota vs. Green Bay game, while living up to expectations, is not a topic I would like to touch upon for it seemed to be the talk of the week and continues. Brett Favre this, Brett Favre that. He is a great QB and will go down in history as one of the best to ever play the game, however, he has tainted my soul because of his lack of dedication to the Packers, discipline to mean what he says and basically the way he has toyed with the media, the organizations and better yet, the fans. Then again, I am looking forward to the Vikings/Packers matchup at Lambeau on November 1st. What kind of reception will the fans have in store for him?
Last week, the Steelers running game got a huge boost from 2nd-year running back Rashard Mendenhall. He had 29 rushes for 165 yards and 2, count 'em, 2 TD's. This week, the Steelers ride their bus into Ford Field to play a hapless Lions team who could not create a 2 game winning streak, ultimately bowing to the Bears 48-24 which included a helicopter dive, a la John Elway, into the endzone by Jay Cutler. I'm going with the Steelers in this game. We know they have an above average passing game and last week they showed they can run the ball. Hard to pick a Lions team who, well who just plain stinks. Mendenhall should have another big game against this weak Lions D. Look for Big Ben to hand off to Rashard 25-30 times while gaining 120-130 yards and at least one touchdown.
PICK: Steelers PLAY: Rashard Mendenhall BENCH: Matthew Stafford
Was anyone else glad to see Mark Sanchez have a bad game last week? The Saints tore him a new one all game, picking him off 3 times and also sacking him in the endzone while fumbling then falling on the ball for a TD. This week the Jets head to sunny Miami for a showdown with a Miami team who has not lived up to expectations thus far. Chad Pennington is out for the season with yet ANOTHER shoulder injury and replaced by Chad Henne. That's a lot of Chad on one team. I wonder if Chad Hutchinson is their 3rd string QB? Even bigger news is that the Browns traded Braylon Edwards to the Jets for Chansi Stuckey and LB Jason Trusnik. With Edwards in a contract year, will he and Sanchez get on the same page and maybe make a deep playoff run? Stay tuned! I think Miami gets the better of the Jets this week whether or not Braylon Edwards plays and Sanchez will have his second bad showing in as many games.
PICK: Dolphins BENCH: Chansi Stuckey, Mark Sanchez
Philadelphia hosts the Bucs this week in a game featuring an injured McNabb starting after a 3 game absence. As bad as the Bucs have been this season, their struggles will continue and McNabb will come out throwing. So look for Eagles receivers to put up some big numbers. My Sleeper Pick this week is Eagles receiver Jason Avant. He has quietly and regularly been making catches and gaining yards. He may not be a WR1 or even 2, but he runs his routes well and has good chemistry with McNabb. Look for him to have a big game this week.
I find myself singing Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and thinking about the NFL teams without a win. Titans, Buccaneers, Browns, Chiefs, Panthers and Rams. Of these teams, all of them, with the exception of the Rams, I feel, have a good shot at winning at least 1 game. The Titans will most likely come out of this group with the most wins but at this point even that is uncertain. Which brings me to song number 2: Toby Keith's "As Good As I Once Was." Last season the Titans had the NFL's best record at 13-3. This season, an exact switch is the most likely of scenarios. Song number 3? You will have to read next week's post but if I have as much luck as I had the previous 2 weeks, it may look something like Beck's "Loser" or CCR's "Bad Moon Rising."

The Start of the (Good) Bye-Weeks
Wonder how Plaxico is holding up in prison? Wait, I don't care. And the Giants(4-0) do not seem to be missing him.
I am struggling with something here. Maybe someone can shed a little light. How is it that the Chicago Bears can win two weeks in a row due to the opposing kicker missing 2 field goals(see: Week 3 Winners and Whiners)? Befuddling, partly because I am a Bears fan and they should have lost that game and partly because I'm pretty sure that has never happened before. Anyone recall this happening in the NFL? Comment.
Brett Favre made me eat my words from last week. His touchdown pass to Greg Lewis in the corner of the end zone with 2 seconds on the clock capped yet another 4th quarter comeback by the mighty Brett. How many does that make? A gazillion? During that game, Frank Gore injured his ankle and will miss 3 games. Can the once mighty 9'ers continue playing at a high level without their star RB? Does Shaun Hill have what it takes to take control of the offense and not have to rely on Gore 75% of the game? And, last question, which mediocre receiver will step up and make the big plays when needed? Guess we will find out in the coming weeks.
I am done picking Tennessee. For two straight weeks they have rolled over and played dead. Did anyone predict they would start the season 0-3 after coming off a 13-3 season a year ago? If anyone is looking for advice on whether to pick the Tiny Titans, look elsewhere this week. Until they pull out a victory, your guess is as good as my 5 year old niece's! But for anyone who has Chris Johnson on their fantasy team, he has been a bright spot in a rather dismal start to the young season.
Cincinnati has quite the favorable matchup when they travel to in-state and division rival Cleveland. My advice: Play any Bengals offensive starter you may have. Palmer should break out bigger than against the Packers, Ochocinco will have a monster game, heck even(gulp!)Cedric Benson, he of a driving while drunk and boating while drunk fame, should rack up some decent fantasy points. I really wish he got hammered and decided to fly a plane just to complete the trifecta. This game should be a walk in the park for the surprising Bengals. PICK: Cincinnati PLAY: Carson Palmer, Chad Ochocinco, Cedric Benson BENCH: Brady Quinn, Braylon Edwards
Another game that seems somewhat one-sided is Oakland traveling to Houston. Ahhh, the Raiders. Once a powerhouse and a giant force to be reckoned with. Now, I don't even think they could beat any team in the Lingiere Bowl! JaMarcus Russell is NOT the answer at quarterback. He doesn't have good mechanics, he has no pocket presence and he thinks that he can redeem everything that has gone bad by throwing the deep ball more often than he should. Hail Mary's do not solve problems. But maybe Al Davis(2nd appearance) hasn't been saying enough of them. Houston's Matt Schaub should have a field day against the poor Raiders secondary. Look for him to throw for 300+ yards and at least 2 touchdowns. PICK: Houston PLAY: Matt Schaub BENCH: Any and all Raiders
Week in and week out, new players step up and become the Fantasy Stud of the Week. And each week, it gets harder and harder to predict who will be that guy. But as I mention each week, these are guys who I feel have the ability to have a breakout game and get those elusive points in a WR3, RB2 or flex position. Glen Coffee(49ers) is my Sleeper Pick this week. He was thrown into the starting RB position in San Fran this week and I feel he will deliver a solid outing. I project 15 carries 95 yards and at least one TD. Remember, they are playing the Lambs, I mean, Rams.
I stood in front of a 50" Plasma TV in Target the other day for a good 20 minutes contemplating everything I have written above. Have you seen the Sears commercial staring Mr. Favre? That looked like me, except, I wasn't making a purchase nor was I getting paid a ton of money to stand in front of a large television. Oh, and I also don't play QB in the NFL. Okay, so it was nothing like that commercial, but you get my point. Remember last week when I blamed El Nino? This week, I blame the Olympic Committee. Trying to lure viewers away from football by creating this Soap Opera of a decision for the 2016 games? We all love dramatics which is why we love football(and loathe Brett Favre). Remember, if you take my advice and I am wrong, blame El Nino, the IOC or your neighbor who prefers NASCAR over football.

Week 3 Winners and Whiners
The Chicago Bears beat the defending Super Bowl Champs thanks in part to 2 missed field goals by the Steelers kicker, the Saints demolished a stingy Eagles defense and Plexi-glass Burress may become someone's bitch in prison very soon(not necessarily football-related, but close enough). Comments on any of this? Go for it.
There is a plethora of intriguing games this coming weekend. With the season, the players and coaches in full swing, Week 3 is going to be a week in which a little separation between the playoff teams and the dreamers will be shown. Can the 49ers get to 3-0 against an undefeated Minnesota team in which Adrian Peterson WILL participate in? Did anyone predict that they would start 2-0? Not this guy. Can the Saints keep up the high scoring pace against an improving Buffalo team? Probably. The Saints are on pace to destroy the Points Scored record set by the 2007 Patriots. Will they achieve it? Shake the Magic 8-Ball and you will most likely find your answer.
This week boasts only 4 conference games: The Steelers roll into Cincy who are both 1-1 meanwhile the defeated Browns head to Baltimore to face a Ravens team whose QB, Joe Flacco, has been on fire to start the season. Also, the Jags head to Houston, whose offense came alive against one of the best defenses in the league last week, sending the Titans to an 0-2 record. Lastly, Denver heads to the Black Hole to face an Oakland team who seem to have started putting it together. Will it last over the course of the season? Most signs point to no. But keep drafting the speed guys Al Davis. Eventually, your team will consist of 11 guys who can run the 40 yard dash in 4.4 seconds. Yes, even the linemen.
Can we talk about Plaxico Burress going to prison? He gets 3 showers per week and 3 hours a day out of his cell. Tough. Maybe you will think twice about carrying a non-registered handgun into a club and also not shoot yourself. Ok, that's enough.
Are the 2-0 Jets for real? Last week, I predicted Tom Brady and the Patriots to continue their home dominance over New York's Mean Green Machine. The Jets prevailed and their defense looked better than it has in about a decade, maybe more. Did Broadway Joe instill his "fun" side into the once lifeless looking Jets? Rex Ryan has them playing and playing well. Sanchez has the poise of a veteran in the pocket and will continue looking downfield. But I think Tennessee will finally put a 1 in the Win column. PICK: Tennessee
The Bears run game has looked less than mediocre yet going up against a weak Seahawks defense this week, should get them back on track. Matt Forte has not started this season like he finished last season, but expect him to rattle off some big runs in the Crow's nest which should open up the passing game as well. The Bears defense should also step up in this game with Matt Hasselbeck out because of a cracked rib being replaced by the "run first, pass never" Seneca Wallace meaning you will see more 4 and 5 man fronts to stop the run game and to keep Wallace in the pocket. PICK: Chicago PLAY: Matt Forte BENCH: Matt Hasselbeck
Pierre Garcon was a very popular pickup this week in the Fantasy world because of the injury to Anthony Gonzalez. But I am not ready to drink that Kool-Aid yet so, therefore, this weeks' Sleeper Pick I am going with Chester Taylor. Adrian Peterson has had stiffness in his back and was limited in practice throughout the week, so expect Taylor to siphon some carries away from Peterson this week. Brad Childress can ill-afford to lose his franchise back, especially with an over-the-hill QB who has less-than-stellar arm at age 39 and two mediocre back-ups. The Purple People Eaters will have to run the ball to be successful against the upstart 49ers which means more carries for Taylor.
SLEEPER: Chester Taylor
I know I usually post on Wednesdays, so I apologize for any inconvenience I may have caused any of you this week. However, since this is something I do for sheer enjoyment to provide you with the best possible advice from days and days of constant research, it never hurts to actually read these posts or follow them on a weekly basis and perhaps email or leave a comment. So I do not fully blame myself. I partially blame El Nino.

Wild Opening Weekend, on to Week 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrhBXbVmrWc
Insane. Would you like to know what else is insane? 6 TD passes. Drew Brees torched the Lions defense(like we all knew he would) for a whopping 6 TD's. Just about every Saints receiver had a touchdown and I think some of the fans may have caught a few as well. If you had Drew Brees and lost your fantasy game this week, you may want to rethink playing fantasy football. Retire right now. And after that, move to Montana and live in the woods where there is no computer access. Mess with Sasquatch, play football with trees, whatever.
In my 1st (un)official week of predictions and fantasy advice, I feel as though I contributed nicely(okay, maybe not on the Anthony Fasano part, -3 points) but my thoughts on Philly beating down Carolina were right on. And maybe Carson Palmer didn't throw 6 TD's, or one for that matter, but he seems to have a healthy shoulder and elbow again and could have a breakout year. Here's hoping.
Week 2 doesn't offer as many rival games as Week 1 did, but there are some good ones out there. Carolina at Atlanta looks to be a good matchup. Can Delhomme return to form? In his previous 2 games, dating back to the playoffs last year, he has thrown 9 INT's. Not a very good showing for a guy who was an elite QB in their Super Bowl run of 2005. Pick: Atlanta
Another game of interest is Pittsburgh at Chicago. Two teams with stellar defenses battling it out. With Troy Polamalu out this week, expect the Bears and Jay Cutler to find a better rhythm than they showed last Sunday night against the rival Packers. I feel as though Cutler will bounce back big against a defense lacking their best player in the secondary and arguably the league. Play: Jay Cutler, Devin Hester Bench: Willie Parker Pick: Chicago
Finally, not so much of a thriller in my mind, and I try to stay away from talking anything East, but the Patriots roll into the Meadowlands where last week we saw rookie Mark Sanchez and the Jets defense man-handle a potent Houston offense, allowing only 7 points. Can the Jets beat the Patriots and possibly show them they won't be a doormat anymore? My prediction is no. The Jets will put up a fight, but in the end, Brady and Moss and Co. will be too much for the J-E-T-S. Pick: New England
My sleeper pick this week, which isn't much of a sleeper, I'm going with Jordy Nelson from the Packers. He flashed signs of brilliance last week on punt returns while filling in for Will Blackmon and I believe he may have won the job as kickoff/punt returner. Watch for him to be a 3rd receiver going up against a weak Bengals defense.
I welcome any comments you have about anything you may have read in this article. And remember, tell your friends. I will be posting each week with my predictions and so-called advice. But again, it's for fantasy purposes only. Not intended to be the correct advice, that your Dad always claimed he had, so use at your own discretion.

Week 1 Sleepers, Picks, Tips, Etc.
Which brings me to Fantasy Football.
I have been an opponent to upwards of one hundred different teams in my day, winning my fair share of games but losing quite a bit in the first few seasons. The 1999-2000 NFL season was my first experience with Fantasy Football. I was a wet-behind-the-ears teenager in my first year of college and a total sports nut. I probably should have done more research back then for, if my memory serves me correctly, and it sometimes slips away in my old age, I won 3 games. Not a very good showing for someone who wanted to be a Fantasy Football guru. However, I perservered over the next few seasons, winning more games each season and finally in 2005, I won the league's Super Bowl. And, just like the Patriots in '03 and '04, the Broncos in '97 and '98 and the Cowboys in '92 and '93(see the pattern?), I won back-to-back championships. There have been other teams, i.e. Packers, Steelers and 49ers, who also have won back-to-back Super Bowls, but those first 3 were from my own recollection.
Since 1999-2000, Fantasy Football has grown exponentially in popularity. Certain years, I could not bribe enough friends to join a league with me. Now I have some chomping at the bit, inquiring about the upcoming Fantasy season in March!
As I continued to play Fantasy Football, I also became a more intelligent fan, learning more and more about the intricacies of the game(I also have to thank Madden '03-'08), the coaching aspect, the strategy involved during the 60 minutes of back and forth blocking, throwing, running, tackling and basically beating the bejesus out of each other.
Okay, no more about my Fantasy Football profile.
Being an avid researcher, I have a few tricks, tips and some overall advice for anyone willing to use it for this upcoming season. I will be posting every week with my so-called advice so make sure to either follow this blog or just keep an eye on Facebook for the new updates. Feel free to use anything in this blog to better your fantasy team or confidence pool this season. Just don't chastise me if I am wrong. No one makes the right picks every week. Ask the experts at ESPN.
QB Comeback Player: Carson Palmer, Cincinnati.
After missing most of the '08 season with a elbow injury, Palmer is due for another breakout year. He has a rejuvenated Chad(Johnson)Ochocinco, and the sure-handed Laveranues Coles to throw to. Not to mention, an always reliable Ben Utecht at the TE position. If Palmer can stay healthy, expect him to throw for 3,500-3,800 yards and 25 TD's. While those are not spectacular numbers, they are quite serviceable ones for someone who drafts QB's after their WR1 and RB1 positions have been filled. Play him.
Sleeper: Anthony Fasano, Miami
Atlanta vs. Miami in Atlanta. Tough game to pick if you are in any type of pick 'em league. However, both teams have explosive running games, decent defenses and above-average special teams. The winner of this game will be decided on who can throw the ball downfield better. Matt Ryan had a phenomenal rookie season, but expect many defenses to step it up against the Falcons this year. In Miami, Fasano can change a game. He has not posted huge numbers in his short career, but expect him to make some big catches and be a threat in the redzone.
Game of the Week: Philadelphia at Carolina
Carolina boasts one of the best running back duos in the game today. Philadelphia has been one of the stingiest defenses in recent years. With Jake Delhomme more of an afterthought and one aging receiver(Muhamed) and one that has not yet grasped the offense in his 3rd season(Jarrett), expect the Panthers to run run run and the Eagles defenses to stack the box to stop the run, forcing Delhomme to make plays with his arm.
Pick: Philadelphia

The writings in this blog are purely my thoughts and forecasts for the upcoming NFL season and for use in Fantasy Football purposes only. I have done enough research on everything football to make NASA engineers look like 4th graders getting ready for their spelling quiz yet that does not give me the right to be 100% correct on each piece of advice. Use at your own discretion but make sure to praise me if I'm right and you did not heed my advice. Enjoy!
